English Education Advising Tips by Dr. Angela Insenga

ENGL ED majors should not attempt to take ENGL 4384 and ENGL 4286 in the same semester.

If they have not finished area B.2 or D.3 in the core, ENGL ED majors should attempt to exempt MEDT 2401 by taking a core class that serves as an exemption course (CS 1020, CS 1030, or CISM 2201).

ENGL ED majors can also test out of the MEDT 2401 class; details are on the English Education site.

ENGL ED majors must apply and be accepted to the Teacher Education Program before they can take upper-division ENGL and ED courses located in the SEED concentration. To apply, they should contact the Coordinator of ENGL ED in the English department. Prerequisites:  a 2.7 GPA, an exemption or passing score on the GACE Basic Skills test (either a 43 on the ACT or a score of 1000 on Math and Verbal of the SAT) and they must have completed the introductory ED courses in the concentration.

ENGL ED majors who entered the program in fall of 2008 must take ENGL 3400. The course is strongly recommended for all other ENGL ED majors, as it deals with teaching writing, an occupation that will take up the majority of our students' time after they graduate.

ENGL 4238 and SEED 4271 are offered once per year, in the fall and spring respectively.  Since students must participate in TR day-long observations out in the public school system for these classes, it is imperative that they have MW or MWF  schedules during the semesters in which they sign up for these two courses.  These courses are not sequential; one is not a pre-requisite for the other.

Students who are planning on taking ENGL 4238 or SEED 4271 must fill out Field Experience forms including a Criminal Background Check (CBC) before they can register for either class.  To inquire about this paperwork, they should contact Helen Chambers and/or Kaye Ferguson in the Office of Field Experiences (9-6101) or the Coordinator of ENGL ED, who can advise them.

Students must finish all courses before their final semester, in which they take only ENGL 4286—Internship.  They should contact the Coordinator for advisement prior to this last semester so that s/he can perform a degree evaluation.

If students have questions about the program’s requirements or what it means to be an ENGL ED major, they can ALWAYS sign up for a time to see the Coordinator during advisement or office hours.  E-mail is also a great way to contact the current Coordinator—ainsenga@westga.edu
