Simms's most important papers, including personal memoranda and manuscripts of unpublished works, are in the Charles Carroll Simms Collection at the South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina.

The most valuable single source for the study of the author is The Letters of William Gilmore Simms, ed. Mary C. Simms Oliphant, Alfred Taylor Odell, and T. C. Duncan Eaves (6 vols., 1952-1982).
