Annual Scholarships and Awards of Excellence
V.A. Leonard Scholarship
V.A. Leonard founded Alpha Phi Sigma in 1942. He received his
Ph.D. in Criminology and Public Administration. The V.A. Leonard
scholarship was established in 1982 in honor and recognition of
Dr. Leonard's leadership and hard work in the field of Criminal
Justice. This scholarship is based on academic achievement,
professional recommendations, and extracurricular activities.
The recipients will each receive a scholarship of $1,000 and a
certificate.
Regina B. Shearn Scholarship
Dr. Regina B. Shearn is the first National Executive Director of
Alpha Phi Sigma. Alpha Phi Sigma has grown considerably and
continues to grow and thrive under her leadership and tutelage.
The scholarship was established in her name in 2001. This
scholarship is is based on academic performance, leadership and
service, personal statement and evaluation reports. Recipients
will each receive a scholarship of $1,000 and a certificate.
Detective Cheryl Seiden Memorial Scholarship
Metro-Dade Police Detective Cheryl Seiden was
killed in the line of duty. Her husband, Mark Seiden established
an annual $1,000 undergraduate scholarship in his wife’s memory.
Mark Seiden is an attorney in Dade County and is also a retired
Sergeant with the Metro-Dade Police Department. Applicants must
submit a 10-15 page paper on “The Evolving Role of Women
in Law Enforcement”.
Public Agency Training Council Criminal Justice Scholarship
The sole purpose of the PATC is to provide
quality training in various contemporary issues such as
corrections/court security, drugs/narcotics, crime scene,
hostages, terrorism,leadership/supervision, school related
violence, and criminal investigation. The Public Agency Training
Council has established an annual $1,000 scholarship to be
awarded to an undergraduate student. Submit a 10-15 page paper
as to why training programs are essential to law enforcement
personnel.
Best Paper Competition
First place will receive a scholarship of $500 and second place
will receive a scholarship of $250. Undergraduates are to submit
a 7-10 page paper on the topic "A Contemporary Issue in Criminal
Justice."
