Photo of Pafford BuildingThe Sociology program seeks to provide students with mastery of basic academic subject matters along with the learning skills necessary for enrichment and continued success in academic and workplace environments following graduation. The BS degree program provides sociology majors with a working knowledge of sociological theory and research methodologies, knowledge of findings relevant to issues of diversity, skills for the preparation and presentation of research reports, skills related to researching and seeking positions in the job market and in graduate education, and ethics.

B.S. in Sociology

Program Description

The Sociology program at UWG offers the BS degree to prepare students for advanced graduate and professional school and for entrance into the job market in business, government, non-profit organizations, and social services work.

Internships are available to provide on site, practical experience. Students are encouraged to pursue independent research, collaborate with professors on their research, and present their work at annual conferences such as the Georgia Sociological Association and the Southeastern Undergraduate Sociology Symposium. The Sociology Club provides students with fun and support, career information, opportunities for community service, speakers, and other activities. Students who qualify are also invited to join the national sociology honor society, Alpha Kappa Delta.

Declaration Requirements

Students must have cumulative GPA (including all transfer credit) of 2.0 at the time of the request to declare the major.

Learning Outcomes

Students completing the B.S. degree with a major in Sociology should:

  1. Be able to communicate (orally and in writing) how sociology contributes to an understanding of social reality.
  2. Understand theoretical and methodological approaches to description and interpretation.
  3. Understand basic concepts, perspectives, and their interpretive applications.
  4. Understand the nature of culture and social structure.
  5. Understand the reciprocal relationship between the individual and society.
  6. Understand the diversity of American society.
  7. Demonstrate an ability to think critically.
  8. Show specific knowledge in one subfield of sociology.

Minor in Sociology

Minimum of 15 hours. Select 12-15 hours of Upper level sociology courses as well as SOCI 1101 (3 hours - mandatory).

Minor in Women's Studies

Select five courses from three different areas of study. A list of approved courses can be obtained from the coordinator of the program. For more information, please view the College of Arts & Sciences page on the Women's Studies minor.

Extra-curricular activities

Several student-run organizations are available for undergraduates who wish to become involved. We currently host the Sociology Club and the Sigma Phi Omega honor society.
