Topic 1.4  Measurement Variables

Leaping Frogs Activity

Use a dot plot to discuss 6 key features:

  1. center
  2. variability
  3. shape
  4. peaks/clusters
  5. outliers
  6. granularity

Other graphs for quantitative data (create with frog activity data)

  1. stem-and-leaf plot
  2. grouped frequency table
  3. histogram

Suppose I wanted to address the question, “Do boy frogs tend to leap farther than girl frogs?”

I would need to construct a side-by-side stem plot (AKA back-to-back stem plot)

Definition: Statistical Tendency—a rule that is true in general but there are exceptions.

Examples: Males are usually taller than females but not always
