International film series to be presented

January 27, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of West Georgia presents the Spring 2003 International Film Series. This semester the series focuses on women directors from around the world. All films will be shown on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. in the TLC building, room 1200.

The series will start Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a German film entitled Enlightenment Guaranteed. The film, partly fiction, partly documentary, tells the comic story of two German brothers who travel to Japan, get lost in Tokyo, lose all their money, and wind up spending two weeks in a Buddhist monastery.

Feature movies include:

Tuesday, Feb. 28: Venus Beauty Institute: It is a tragic-comic look at the life of a middle-aged woman who lives in Paris and works in a beauty salon. The film investigates how a beauty salon can function as therapy for the soul, especially in a large city where people are often condemned to anonymity.

Tuesday, March 25: Between Pancho Villa and a Naked Woman: This Mexican film investigates and comments satirically on the traditional, socio-cultural roles that men and women assume in western societies.

Tuesday, April 15: Sangharsh: This Indian film is a Bollywood version of Hollywood’s Silence of the Lambs. The film is about a girl on the trail of a psychopathic criminal who has kidnapped a minister’s child. This psychopath is terrified of death and wants to gain immortality by child sacrifice.

The film series offers a change from the usual Hollywood fare, showing recent foreign films that have been tremendously successful in their own countries but do not generally make it to the big screen in local theatres. The films, all comedies, cover a wide spectrum of issues and hold appeal for anyone.

All films will be followed by a discussion with the audience. For further information, contact the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at 770-836-6515.
