Club to address, teach firearms issues

January 14, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The topic of gun control and safety has always been a concern for the citizens of Carroll County, so a new Rod and Gun Club at the University of West Georgia is forming to address and teach many of the issues that are associated with firearms.

An organizational meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. in UCC Room 311.

The club will sponsor and promote good sportsmanship through proficient and enjoyable trap, skeet, pistol and rifle shooting. It will also promote safe handling of firearms and proper shooting techniques through education and information. Classes will be available for beginner shooters on safety and techniques. For women, a self-defense and shooting class will be taught.

According to Tim Petty, education technology support specialist and organizer of the club, the NRA is willing to sponsor some women’s shooting classes. Petty anticipates that these classes will be open to the public for a small fee.

Dr. Walter Todd, coordinator of intramural and recreation services at UWG, is an NRA-certified instructor who will be teaching the instructional portion of the classes along with Petty.

Membership to the club is open to faculty, staff, students and their families for a $5 membership fee per semester. For more information concerning the Rod and Gun Club, contact Petty at 770-836-6459.
