International Night January 12, 2004 CARROLLTON, GA - The International Student Club at the University of West Georgia is hosting its annual International Night on Thursday, Jan. 29. This entertaining and enlightening event gives students from different countries a chance to introduce their culture to West Georgia. According to Sylvia Shortt, assistant director of the Student Development Center, past International nights have been a huge success. Last year more than 700 campus and community members attended the event. There are currently 108 international students from over 40 countries ranging from Nigeria to Japan attending UWG this semester. These students kick off the event by preparing a traditional dish that is unique to his or her own country to serve on the buffet. After the buffet, students from all over the world will demonstrate their native dancing, singing, comedy and fashion traditions. This entertainment can include anything from acting to acrobatics. According to Adebayo Onabule, international assistant at UWG, “International Night is really an awareness-building event. In as much as the international students try to make it palatable and entertaining, they also try to educate the students and the Carrollton community as a whole.” International Night will take place in the Z-6 Food Service Building at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $3 with a student ID and $5 without a student ID, and can be purchased in advance from the Student Development Center, 137 Parker Hall, or from an International Club member. Tickets will also be on sale at the door the night of the event. Because of the limited seating capacity, it is advised to purchase tickets in advance.
