Silent auction to benefit the Marathon

January 14, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Students at the University of West Georgia will once again team up with local sponsors and other volunteers to conduct the third annual Marathon. The Marathon is a series of events that raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Coming up is the Marathon Silent Auction set for Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 311 of the UCC.

The Silent Auction will have an assortment of items for bid including gift certificates from local restaurants, office furniture, tanning packages and even a Mike Vick autographed jersey and helmet.

According to Jana Phillips, public relations co-chair for the Marathon, last year’s Marathon Silent Auction was a huge success. “We raised about $2,000 then and hope to exceed that amount this year,” she said.

Phillips explained that the silent auction is one of many events including a golf tournament, yard sale and toll roads that will culminate with the Marathon. The Marathon, which is the grand finale of the events, will be held March 13 in the HPE Building on campus. Participants will remain on their feet for 12 hours engaged in such activities as games, dancing and just having fun with the CMN kids.

“Our minimum amount is set at $25,000 for the Marathon but any penny extra will help,” Phillips said. The grand total will be announced the day of the Marathon.

In addition to participating in the silent auction, community members and companies may support this effort by being sponsors during the Marathon. Last year’s sponsors included SMI, Southwire, Kroger, Morgan Oil, Publix, Papa John’s Pizza, ARAmark, UWG Publications and Printing, the West Georgian, and Pizza K.
