January 26, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Performer, teacher and author Dr. Robert Pace, a leader in music education for over 40 years, will present “An Interactive Piano Workshop with Robert Pace” on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the University of West Georgia Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

Instructors of piano and piano pedagogy throughout the region are invited to participate in the one-day workshop, which is sponsored by the UWG Department of Music, the Townsend Center and the Western Georgia Music Teachers Association.

The workshop will be divided into three sessions that provide an overview of the essential components of keyboard instruction from preschool to the early advanced level. Discussion will center on the cognitive aspects of music learning expressed through psycho-motor skills; the importance of structured, sequential learning; and intermediate to early advanced repertoire.

Pace did his undergraduate study at Juilliard with the famed Josef and Rosina Lhevinne and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at Teachers College, Columbia University. He taught at Juilliard before becoming head of piano instruction at Teachers College. He has also chaired the Teachers College Music Department.

Pace has served as piano editor of Music Journal, national piano chair of the Music Educators National Conference and educational director of the National Piano Foundation from its inception in 1963 until 1977, when he became executive director of the International Piano Teaching Foundation. He was also a member of the original four-member committee appointed by President John F. Kennedy to make a study of music in the United States.

The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fee is $70 for general registrants, $15 for UWG students and $25 for all other students. For registration information, contact Dr. Carol Gingerich, assistant professor of music, at 770-836-6516.
