Continuing Education Opportunities January 14, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - Attending classes at the University of West Georgia can be a beautiful thing. This semester the Department of Continuing Education is offering two new classes that can help transform a bland home into one decorated with exquisite flower arrangements and well-crafted caned chairs. A series of floral design course will allow flower lovers to celebrate spring all winter, by teaching participants to design professional quality floral arrangements. Classes will begin at the Newnan campus on Jan. 18 and the Carrollton classes will begin Jan. 25. The class will meet every other Tuesday from 7-9:00 p.m., where Barbara Markham, a local floral designer, will lead students in developing their artistic skills. Class topics include bud vase bouquets, corsages, vase and small container arrangements, round center pieces, roses, one- sided arrangements, and hand-tied bouquets. Students attending the class will be encouraged to take home their newly created designs to enhance their home or office environment. Participants may register for any or all of the six two-hour classes. Participants who complete the 12 hours of the comprehensive series and assemble a picture portfolio of their designs both in and out of class can earn floral design certificates. With this certificate a participant can be well on their way to new career paths in the floral design industry. To enroll in the entire certificate program the cost will be $125, though individual classes will be $25 each. There will also be an additional cost of about $25 for supplies for each class. The department of Continuing Education is also offering a chair-caning course that will allow participants to construct their own herringbone chairs. With three weaving techniques offered, participants can learn to fix the old broken caned chairs collecting dust in the attic, or design a new one that will give life to the home. The course content includes learning how to complete herringbone weave footstools, rush and strand caning of footstools, chairs and child-sized rockers. Participants will go home with one of their own fine pieces of handcrafted furniture. The first class will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. There will be a supply fee of approximately $25 due the first day of class, with a $44 course price.
