Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Activities

January 5, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Student Government Association (SGA) is sponsoring the inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Week, Jan. 10-13.

The week’s events kick off with a celebration at the Technology-enhanced Learning Center (TLC) Building atrium. All UWG students, faculty and staff are invited to come by and sign the “Wall of Justice” during the day.

“The Wall of Justice is a vigil that symbolizes Dr. King's dream,” said Jason Allen, SGA president. “This year it will be in the shape of UWG in which all West Georgia faculty, staff, or students can sign/or write a message within the UWG to symbolize how each of us are living out the dream here”

On Tuesday, Jan. 11, a Unity Breakfast sponsored by the Black Student Alliance, International Student Club and the Student Activities Council, will be in the lower level of the Food Services Building (Z-6) at 8 p.m. Jonathan Sprinkles, author of Why Settle? Be the Best YOU That YOU Can Be! and Student Success Stories, will be the guest speaker.

“Sprinkles’ stories about his struggles with self-limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging habits have captured the hearts of audiences around the country,” said Allen. “His charismatic and highly-energetic style has quickly established him as one of America's best young speakers.”

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, a 4 p.m. Unity March will begin at the east entrance of UWG and conclude at the University Campus Center. The UWG United Voices Gospel Choir will perform during the march and in Room 311 of the Humanities Building at 7 p.m.

The week’s festivities will conclude Thursday with a MLK Candlelight Vigil at 7 p.m. at the Toyal Jackson Memorial behind the Martha Monroe building, adjacent to the fountain in front of the UCC.
