Mascot Discussion January 24, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The Student Government Association (SGA) at the University of West Georgia will host an open panel discussion called the “Mascot Rap” on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bonner Lecture Hall on campus. SGA sponsored a panel discussion in October, which featured faculty, staff and student representatives and discussed important issues pertaining to the mascot. The purpose of the panel was to educate UWG students about the concerns that surround the mascot controversy, including the NCAA’s national guidelines regarding Native American mascots. These guidelines suggest that all Native American mascots change or that the educational institution take measures to educate its entire student body about the Native American culture. The panel on Jan. 26 will be the last one sponsored by the SGA regarding the mascot, according to Jerald Willis, SGA Diversity Leadership Council chair. Willis wants “all students to come out and voice their opinion about the mascot that is not visibly present at this time.” SGA is trying to get students’ feedback so that they can report back to the University on this issue. The discussion will be facilitated by Conrad Musey, SGA judicial chair, and other student leaders. -30- |
