Physics lectures this semester January 24, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s Department of Physics, in coordination with the local chapter of Sigma Xi, will be hosting a seminar series to celebrate the World Year of Physics. Among the activities that are planned are a number of lectures from local physicists. Eight such lecturers, representing all of the major universities in the Atlanta area, will speak on Friday afternoons from 2-2:50 p.m. at the Marion Crider Lecture Hall at the James E. Boyd building during spring semester, according to Dr. James Espinosa, assistant professor of physics and coordinator of the series. The first speaker on Jan. 28 will be Dr. Kurt Warncke from Emory University, who will speak about biophysics and present his research examining the catalysis of enzymes in biological systems. Other speakers include Dr. Eric Weeks, also from Emory University and winner of the PECASE award, speaking on experimental soft condensed matter on March 4. Dr. Ronald Mickens of Clark Atlanta University will discuss mathematical physics on April 22. The World Year of Physics was declared to be 2005 by the United Nations and the United States Congress in recognition of the 100 years that have passed since Albert Einstein published three extremely influential papers on physics in 1905. To help commemorate this event, people around the world are organizing speeches, special traveling physics demonstrations, and an around the world relayed light signal on April 18, the 50th anniversary of Einstein’s death.
