Wright Scholars Concert January 28, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The UWG Music Department’s Wright Scholars Concert will take place on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 8:15 p.m. in Kathy Cashen Hall, in the Humanities building on the University campus. The annual concert is presented in appreciation of scholarships made possible by an endowment given to the Music Department in 1976 in memory of Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright by the late Dr. J. Carter Wright and his wife Betty Strickland Wright. The Wright Memorial is the largest endowment given specifically to the UWG Music Department, and has generated music scholarships for more than a quarter of a century, a major contribution to the department and to West Georgia students. The February concert showcases both graduate and undergraduate student performers, all of whom are nominated by their instrumental or vocal instructors to audition for the privilege of performing on the concert. This year, the soloists are mezzo-soprano Jennifer Andall of Lawrenceville, soprano Rose Blanchard of Austell, baritone Michael Burnaman of Woodstock, saxophonists William Camp of Rockmart and Emily Cash of Lawrenceville, pianists Rachel Griffin of Conyers, Thomas Vaden of Liburn, and Charlene Wiggins of Carrollton, and soprano Darshena Wood of Union City. They will perform works by Beethoven, Bizet, Brahms, Creston, Gershwin, Gounod, Liszt, Maurice, and Mozart. The performers are students of Dr. John Bleuel (saxophone), Dr. Larry Frazier (voice), Dr. Carol Gingerich (piano), and Julie Lowry (voice). Mrs. Betty Wright will be formally recognized and honored before the performance, which will be preceded at 7:30 p.m. by a reception in the Humanities Lobby for her, the student performers, and audience. The adjacent Gallery 1, featuring Bruce Bobick’s artwork entitled “The Influence of Normandy,” will also be open during the reception.
