Cheerleaders take fifth consecutive national championship
January 19, 2006
CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s Co-ed Cheerleading Squad continued its winning streak with a fifth national consecutive championship at the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) 2006 Nationals in Orlando, Jan. 15.
Sherry Cooney, a UWG cheerleading coach since 1997, has led her squads to place or to win the championship for seven straight years. This is the fifth consecutive year the UWG coed squad has won the national championship.
“We went into this competition with the most veteran team we have,” said Cooney, “But we were still nervous. We put a lot of internal pressure on ourselves. The seniors especially wanted to continue their record in their final year.”
In addition to winning the coed national championship, the UWG All-Girl Squad won the UCA Division II National Championship the same weekend. This is the second time in three years the all-girl squad has won first place in the competition. Both events took place at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Fans can see their favorite champion UWG cheerleaders at the next Braves basketball home game, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. For more information, call 678-839-6643 or go to www.uwgbraves.com.
