Theatre Program presents play at Push Push Theatre

January 11, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Theatre Program will present the theatre production, “Love Letters,” by A. R. Gurney, at the Push Push Theater in East Decatur Station on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The play, which stars UWG President Beheruz N. Sethna and UWG alum Brenda Dangle, begins at 7 p.m. with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The curtain goes up at 8 p.m. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the UWG Theatre Scholarship Fund.

“Love Letters” is a moving play focused on a life-long relationship between a man and a woman, revealed to the audience only through letters they’ve written. A.R. Gurney is one of the most prolific and produced playwrights in America. “Love Letters” has been a hit on and off Broadway. Gurney’s latest work, “Later Life” is now playing in Manhattan.

Sethna said he was happy to take on the role of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III.

“The story is a compelling one,” said Sethna. “To cover 50 years in one play is quite an achievement. This is something I enjoy doing and I am happy to do whatever I can to help further the UWG theatre program’s goals.”

Sethna’s passion for theatre dates back to his high school days. During his years of undergraduate and graduate studies, he participated in theatre and won several awards for his acting and directing. After a hiatus of more than 30 years, Sethna returned to the stage with the role of Lane the butler in “The Importance of Being Earnest,” a UWG 2002 theatre production.

Dangle is a two-time graduate of UWG, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1984 and a Masters of Business Administration in 1987. She opened and operated A Likely Story Book Center, Inc., an independent bookstore in Carrollton, from 1987 until 2002. A decision to completely change careers sent Dangle into the banking industry where she currently is a commercial lender and assistant vice president with Community Bank of West Georgia.

“Although musicals are my passion, I have come to enjoy acting in all types of plays,” Dangle said. “I hope this production of Love Letters will be entertaining for the audience and will raise lots of money for the Theatre Department!”

Dangle’s experience in musical performing includes participation in the Side By Side Singers from 1993-1998, member of the Carrollton Community Chorus for various seasons from 1981-2004, and soloist at various weddings, fund raisers, civic groups, etc.

Her theatrical career includes appearances in “Cute Little Connie Miller,” “Oklahoma,” “Camelot,” “Chapter Two-2004-Faye Medlock” with the Carroll County Community Theatre; “Strawberry Seller” and “Mrs. Bedwin” with the Backyard Family Theatre; “Death and Taxes” with the Encore Theatre; and “Love Letters” with the UWG Theatre Department. She also was the assistant director for “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”

The Push Push Theater, established in 1991, is a unique venue in downtown Decatur that hosts new and experienced acting companies, sponsors workshops for children and adults, and promotes creative developments in theatre. The play will be staged in an intimate space in a theatre of about 100 seats.
Anyone wishing to enjoy a free ride to the performance may contact Dale Duffey at the UWG Alumni House at 678-839-6582 to reserve a spot on a bus which will depart from the Tyus Hall parking lot at 5:30 p.m.

Parking at the theater is free and performance reservations are recommended. Tickets are $20 each. RSVP to Kat McGehee at 678-839-4700 or kmcgehee@westga.edu
