UWG Theatre Program to team up with Alliance TheatreJanuary 11, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Theatre Program will team up with Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre to participate in The Collision Project, an annual touring production that travels to high schools in Georgia. The Alliance Theatre is the largest and one of the most prestigious theatre groups in the southeast. Defy You, Stars, a Collision Project adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, features UWG cast members Reshoun Coverson and Perlisha Jones of Atlanta, Ian Rowswell of Jonesboro, Stephanie Polhemus of Atlanta, Stan Battle of Stone Mountain and Yen Nguyen of Cochran. Rehearsals begin this semester on the UWG campus. Rosemary Newcott, Alliance’s director of Theatre for Youth, will direct the play and be on campus for rehearsals. The play is the finished script from a summer workshop collaboration of high school students and Atlanta playwright Lauren Gunderson. Shelly Elman, associate professor of theatre arts and director of theatre at UWG, said it is an honor and a very exciting development for her students and the university. “We are the third university to work on the project,” said Elman. “But what is unique about UWG’s participation is we now have students in our program who worked on the script as high school students. This is the first time that has happened in the history of the project.” Defy You, Stars is scheduled at the Alliance Theatre main stage for the general public March 27 at 7 p.m. and at Atlanta Public Schools March 28 and 29. The tour of Atlanta-area schools is scheduled April 3-26. For ticket information, call 678-839-4700. -30- |
