UWG hosts 2nd IGNITE program February 5, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia is offering, for the second consecutive year, the IGNITE program. This program allows current high school seniors, who have been conditionally admitted to UWG and who are Honors eligible or pre-selected for a Learning Community, register for fall semester courses before any other freshmen. Due to the successful outcome of last year’s program, this year UWG offers two programs: one specifically for Honors students on Saturday, March 29, and one specifically for Learning Community students on Sunday, April 6. A Learning Community is a group of 25 students who share the same major, take all their classes together and live together in a residence hall. Currently, the College of Arts and Sciences offers five communities every year. Normally, these five include three pre-professional communities (nursing, medicine and engineering) and two thematic communities which has included “Making Decisions,” “The Culture of Family,” “Children” and “Hispanic Culture.” The IGNITE program was created by Dr. Michael Crafton, professor of English, advisor to the vice president for student services and director of eCore, and Laurel Starling, coordinator of orientation and First Year residential programs. IGNITE allows the student to have his/her first choice of classes before all other freshmen. It also allows them to become part of the UWG community long before their peers. Starling said, “We want them to know their new home is ready and waiting for them even before they graduate from high school.” For more information, contact Starling at 770-836-6426 or email her at lstarlin@westga.edu. -30- |
