Jaskiewicz to give recital

February 3, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Department of Music will sponsor a graduate voice recital by Anna Vilpo Jaskiewicz, soprano, on Monday, Feb. 17, at 8:15 p.m. in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall.

Accompanied by pianist George Mann, professor of music, Jaskiewicz will sing American and French songs, Italian arias and German Lieder, including selections ranging from dramatic pieces of the earliest days of opera (from Pergolesi, Cesti, and Handel to Bellini) to modern tunes of Leonard Bernstein.

Some of the more familiar selections will be by Mozart, Liszt and Schubert. A more unfamiliar piece, the “Cycle of Five Kid’s Songs for Soprano” titled “I Hate Music!,” is sure to amuse the audience.

Jaskiewicz is originally from Finland. Before coming to the states, she sang for several years with Finland’s Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir and with the Finnish Philharmonic Choir.

Jaskiewicz came to the United States with a Rotary Scholarship. She graduated from UWG with a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance, and she is currently in the process of completing her master’s degree in vocal performance. For both degrees, she has studied with Dr. Larry Frazier, associate professor of music.

Jaskiewicz has sung with the UWG Opera Workshop in such roles as Flora in La Traviata, Carmen Ghia in The Stoned Guest and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UWG Department of Music at 770-836-6516.
