Sports Marketing hosts annual conference February 28, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Sports Marketing at the University of West Georgia is hosting the 16th Annual Sports, Physical Education Recreation and Law Conference at the Embassy Suites Atlanta (Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta) on March 6-8. The conference brings together academics from around the United States to discuss legal issues relevant to sports, physical education, and recreation. “This conference is hosted in a different city every year. We placed a bid and we were selected to organize it this year,” said Dr. Mark Nagel, assistant professor of Sport Management. “Planning and managing this conference gives UWG Sport Management students a great opportunity to apply the event management principles we discuss in class. It allows them to see how theory and practice come together in planning and managing an event. It is also a great opportunity to listen to experts in the field of legal issues in sport,” said Richard Southall, assistant professor of physical education and recreation. The
keynote speaker in this year’s conference is Greg Heller, chief
council for Turner Sports. “We encourage all students on campus to take advantage of this opportunity to interact with experts from around the country. The program is applicable to anyone who plans to teach, coach, or work in the sport or recreation industries,” added Southall. Every evening during the conference, there will be a president’s reception providing networking opportunities for the attendees. “This conference is a chance to learn about the sport industry and to meet its leaders,” said Nagel. The attendees at the conference will also have the opportunity to tour the Phillips Arena and will receive a discount on the Fox Creek Golf Course, one of the sponsors of the conference. The other sponsors are: UWG College of Education, Reflections Printing, Budweiser, Street & Smith’s SportBusiness Journal, T-Mobile, Jock’s & Jill’s Sports Bar & Grill and America’s Sports Grill. Registration for the conference is open until Thursday, March 6. For more information, contact Nagel at 770-836-4735. -30- |
