UWG presents 4th Tech Expo

February 14, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia presents the 4th Annual College of Education Technology Expo. The expo will be held on Saturday, March 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Education Center. All UWG undergraduate and graduate education candidates as well as K-12 educators are encouraged to attend.

The day will be divided in the following sessions:

Accessing the General Education Curriculum: Technology as a Universal Solution by Dr. Sean Smith, assistant professor of special education at the University of Kansas. This presentation will discuss what general education and special education teachers can do with current as well as emerging classroom technologies to better serve all students in the general education classroom.

Building Your Portfolio With Power Point by Curtis Cearly, director of the West Georgia Educational Technology Training Center. The participants will learn how to use the linking properties of Power Point to create a simple, easy to use, digital portfolio. They will also learn how to use the power of this presentation software to place portfolio assessments in their classroom or to their own uses.

Technology Panning and Budgeting by Cearly. Participants will have the opportunity to ask their technology questions and work with others to determine which answers are best for their school or district.

Using Quick Time VR as a Learning Environment by Dr. William Wiencke, assistant professor of instructional technology. A review of the PT3 project investigating the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a learning environment for students with special needs will be presented. There will be a demonstration on how to create QuickTime VR models.

Fathom: The Statistical Software EVERY Math Teacher Needs by Dr. Angela Barlow, assistant professor of mathematics, and Wendy Davidson, instructor in mathematics. During this session, an overview of the Fathom program will be provided. Participants will be lead throughout a series of activities to allow for individual exploration of the capabilities of Fathom.

Creating a Web Page Using Netscape Composer by Dr. Julie Bartley, associate professor of geology. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of a web page design using Netscape Composer. During the session, they will learn how to construct a basic web page, create links to other web pages and files, import images, and use some of the special features of Netscape Composer.

Digital Video by Dr. Elizabeth Bennett, associate professor of instructional technology. This session will provide an overview of digital video and editing using iMovie, importing video from digital and VHS camcorders, basic editing techniques, special effects and titling will be covered in a hands-on setting.

Picture This: Digital Imagery for the Classroom by Barbara McKenzie, professor of instructional technology and interim chair of the department of media and instructional technology, and Dr. Bill Wiencke, assistant professor of instructional technology. This presentation will provide an overview of digital photography and the ways it can be integrated into the curriculum. Participants will be provided with hands-on learning opportunities using a digital camera and creating and modifying digital images.

Learning in the Palm of Your Hand by Dr. Judy Butler, associate professor of secondary education. Palm Pilots, along with portable keyboards, and wireless technology, present new and exciting opportunities for educators at every level and in all content areas. This session introduces some of the possibilities and provides and opportunity to discuss “The Handheld Educator.”

How to use Spreadsheets Effectively In and Out of the Classroom by Dr. Jorge Gaytan, assistant professor of business administration and director of business education at UWG. During this session, an overview of basic and advanced functions of spreadsheets will be provided. Participants will be led through a series of activities to allow for individual exploration of the capabilities of Excel. Major topics include formulas, functions, menus, smart icons, and charts.

Dollars for Scholars by Dr. Richard Larkin, assistant professor of political sciences and planning. This session is an abbreviated version of the UWG Department of Continuing Education’s popular workshop “Dollars for Scholars: Grant Writing for Teachers.” The session will provide a brief introduction to all aspects of the proposal writing process from generating ideas to administering awards.
