Mid-Winter Choral Concert

February 10, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Music at the University at the West Georgia will present the “Mid-Winter Choral Concert: Concert Choir & Chamber Singers” on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8:15 p.m., at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center (CCAC) at 118 S. White St. Dr. Kevin Hibbard, director of choirs at UWG, will direct the performance while Jan Adams will accompany the Concert Choir on the piano.

The concert will feature mostly contemporary compositions, folksong arrangements, and spirituals. Modern American composers represented include Allen Koepke, André Thomas, Jean Belmont and Carrollton native Terry Lowry. An accomplished composer and pianist, Lowry is minister of music and children at First Baptist Church in Carrollton, and an adjunct instructor at UWG. The Chamber Singers will perform Lowry’s motet “Sing unto the Lord a New Song.” Other contemporary pieces include “Ave maris stella” by Spanish composer Javier Busto, “Ballad of Green Broom” by Benjamin Britten and “Night” and “Morning” by Hungarian composer György Ligeti.

The folksong arrangements include “Away from the Roll of the Sea,” the French song “Ton Thé” accompanied by four-hand piano, and a setting of the Shaker hymn “Ye Followers of the Lamb.”

The choirs will also perform spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan, Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, Jack Halloran and Keith Hampton.

Although this will be the choir’s first performance on the CCAC stage, Dr. Hibbard is optimistic, “We hope that that performing this type of program in the new Cultural Arts Center will attract an audience that hasn’t heard us, in addition to our regular followers.”
