Clarinet Masterclass February 15, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - One of the world’s most renowned musicians is headed to the University of West Georgia as the Department of Music and the Atlanta Clarinet Association (ACA) will present a Masterclass by celebrated clarinetist Karl Leister on Saturday, March 12, from 3-6 p.m., in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall on the UWG campus. The Wilhelmshaven, Germany native is one of the foremost clarinetists in the world. At 19, Leister was appointed solo clarinet of the Berlin Comic Opera in 1957 and in 1959 Berlin Philharmonic Maestro Herbert von Karajan named Leister as principal clarinetist. During his 35-year tenure in Berlin, he also performed regularly as an international soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with many leading musicians and conductors. Leister is currently touring the United States and is internationally known for his solo and orchestral discographies. His works can be heard on labels such as DGG, EMI, Teldec, Phillips, Orfeo, Nimbus and Sony. Leister retired from the Berlin Philharmonic in 1993 to devote his time to solo performing around the world and teaching at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also teaches at the Hochschule fur Musik “Hanns Eisler,” in Berlin. Four clarinetists will each perform for Leister during the Masterclass as part of an individual, 45-minute public lesson. Each advanced University-level student was selected for this Masterclass by the ACA.
