UWG's NAACP chapter hosts Fashion Show

February 3, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Black Student Alliance of the University of West Georgia has announced a series of events planned throughout the entire semester to commemorate Black History Month.

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m., the UWG chapter of the NAACP will sponsor the third annual Cultural Experience Fashion Show in the lower level of the Food Services Building. It will be followed by a career development workshop in the University Community Center (UCC). Tickets will be sold beginning Monday, Feb. 7, in front of the UCC. Prices are $3 in advance and $4 at the door. Previous fashion shows have been standing room only, so students are advised to get their tickets in advance. All proceeds will benefit the UWG NAACP chapter and the Recreation Center in west Carrollton, the chapter’s local philanthropy.

This year’s theme, “Eclectic Differences,” will take a look at the cultural roots that effect today’s fashion trends. The show will feature designs from UWG students.

“I am very excited about this year’s show,” states Lisa Williams, one of the student designers. “We are truly bringing the runway to UWG.”

The NAACP serves as a political voice and unifying governing body for minority students at UWG. Its purpose is to bring cultural, political and educational enhancement to students that face challenges. The chapter also strives to unify the campus and community by embracing differences.

The 2005 Fashion Show Committee includes: Afiya Hinkson of Stone Mountain, Brandi Barkley of Lithonia, Lisa Williams of Carrollton, Amber Waters of Jonesboro, Shannan Young of Covington, Rokeisha Thompson of Stone Mountain, Ashley Ashekun of Loganville, James Almeida of Clarkson, Tiffanie A. Davis of Decatur, Robert Phillips of Decatur, Jason B. Allen of Atlanta and Marcus Johnson of Decatur. Ezra Jackson of Columbus and Lawtionette Faison of Smyrna will host the event.
