March events to celebrate Black History February 23, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - As Black History Month concludes, the Department of Student Activities and the Black Student Alliance (BSA) at the University of West Georgia have planned events throughout March to continue the Black History Series. The BSA will host the annual Heritage Ball on Wednesday, March 2, at 8 p.m. in the lower level of the Food Services building. The event gives African-American students the chance to celebrate their heritage in a formal setting which includes dinner and a reception to follow. Tickets are $7 per student and $10 per couple and can be purchased outside the University Community Center (UCC). On Tuesday, March 8, students will celebrate womanhood at the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall. “Celebration of Womanhood” is an event created by the late Toyal Jackson, who served as the multicultural chair for UWG’s Student Activities Council (SAC). This year the semi-formal event will focus on honoring seven outstanding women who are actively involved on UWG’s campus. It is sponsored by SAC, the Student Government Association (SGA) and Soul Star. The first ever Soul Food Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Food Services building. The event, sponsored by the BSA, is being held to educate students on another important aspect of African-American culture — soul food. Some items on the menu include turkey and dressing, fried chicken and green beans. The events for March will conclude with a discussion in the Bonner Lecture Hall on Thursday, March 31, which will focus on the phrase “sell out” and openly discuss its meaning and implications.
