UWG represented at Music Conference February 10, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - Students and faculty from the Department of Music proudly represented the University of West Georgia at the 2005 Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference (GMEA) in Savannah. UWG students competed in statewide auditions for the All-College Chorus and 17 were chosen. The students were Jennifer Andall of Lawrenceville, Valerie Beck of Cordele, Bowen Behenna of Sharpsburg, Rose Blanchard of Austell, Michael Burnaman of Woodstock, Alfredo Dale Edwards of Vidalia, Afton Fowler of Newnan, Matt Jones of Mableton, Philip Jones of East Point, Debbie Monroe of Buchanan, Phylicia McCutchen of Marietta, Vicki Orme of Douglasville, Andrew Patton of Carrollton, Lindsey Rhodes of White, Cory Speakman of Lawrenceville, Thomas Vaden of Lilburn and Darshena Wood of Union City. Blanchard, Edwards, Jones, Orme, Speakman and Wood were all chosen by auditions to perform as soloists. In the All-College Band Division, UWG instrumentalists Jonathan Broome of Atlanta, Emily Cash of Lawrenceville, Bryan Hall of Douglasville, Chris Holloway of Peachtree City and Erin Williams of Stockbridge were all chosen to attend the conference. Broome, Cash, Hall and Holloway all took first place in the GMEA auditions and earned the first chair in their sections. UWG faculty instructors that participated in the conference were Mariano Pacetti, Eric Slay, Martie Abney, Dr. John Bleuel, Dr. Kevin Hibbard, Dr. Doug Overmier, Dr. Dan Bakos and Dr. Dawn McCord. Hibbard was a chairman of the All-College Chorus Event, Overmier and McCord presented in the area of Band and Music Education Research and McCord presided at two additional sessions. The conference offers students and educators the opportunity to participate in educational sessions and performances, compete in statewide auditions, learn about other music programs and purchase educational materials from vendors. In addition to the presentations and performances, the UWG student chapter of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) attended sessions on recruiting and projects, preparation for the Praxis II and successful job searching and interviewing strategies.
