SPAN Lectures

February 21, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Student Peace Action Network (SPAN), in conjunction with other student organizations and several academic departments at the University of West Georgia, is sponsoring a free lecture series involving pertinent social or environmental concerns. The lecture series is scheduled for Bonner Lecture Hall and will address local and international issues to the UWG and Carrollton communities.

The first lecture is co-sponsored by the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. The speech, entitled “Liberation Theology: Christianity and Social Justice,” will be given by Dr. Kenneth Sammuel, reverend of The Victory Church in Stone Mountain.

The purpose of SPAN, according to organizer Josh Eaton, is to promote peace, social justice and environmental justice through education, activism service and reflection. This is the first year for the lecture series but Eaton hopes that it will become a permanent series at UWG.

“There are a lot of needs in this particular community,” said Eaton. “The lecture series is an attempt to raise awareness.”

The second lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. will feature Manual Mendoza, executive director of Latinos United of Carroll County. He will speak on Latino issues and his work in Carrollton. The lecture will also commemorate Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers, whose birthday is celebrated March 31. The Department of Foreign Languages is co-sponsoring the lecture and will provide complete Spanish translation for Spanish-speakers.

The lecture on Wednesday, April 20, will commemorate Earth Day, addressing international conservation. Dr. Earl Possadt of the US Fish and Wildlife Service will give the speech at 7:30 p.m.

The final installment of this lecture series will occur on Oct. 3, and will be given by Father Roy Bourgeois, M.M. Bourgeois will be speaking about the School of the Americas at Fort Benning and Latin American foreign policy. Bourgeois’ lecture is sponsored by the Deparment of Foreign Languages and Spanish translation will also be provided.

SPAN is sponsored by Dr. Patricia Campbell, associate professor of political science. For more information about SPAN, contact the Department of Political Science at 678-8396504 or email Josh Eaton at xanandax@gmail.com.
