UWG Wind Symphony Performance

February 10, 2005

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Music at the University of West Georgia will present the evening concert “Old and New” by the UWG Wind Symphony on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 8:15 p.m., at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. Dr. Douglas Overmier, director of bands and instructor of percussion at UWG, will direct the group.

The performance will include old favorites as well as rescored arrangements of familiar tunes. Some of the selections that compose the symphony’s older repertoire are Percy Grainger’s “Country Gardens,” Sousa’s “The Thunderer” march and William Schuman’s “Chester.” John Barnes Chance’s “Variation on a Korean Folksong,” Hearshen’s “A Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa” and Ticheli’s setting of “Amazing Grace” round out the new portion of the program.

According to Lorrie Sposato-Allen, program coordinator for the Department of Music, the UWG Wind Symphony “is comprised of UWG’s top wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists.”

The UWG Wind Symphony performs a variety of high-quality works, including classical and more contemporary pieces. Because of their skill, members of this organization, in addition to concerts at UWG, have toured throughout the United States and been featured at music conventions.
