UWG will plant trees for Arbor Day

February 16, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - To commemorate Arbor Day, University of West Georgia students, faculty and staff will plant elm trees along Back Campus Drive at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17th.

Back Campus Drive is a pedestrian-friendly roadway that winds past Gunn and Boykin Halls, the Art Annex, the Boyd and Calloway Buildings, the Richards College of Business and ends at the Geography and Learning Resources Building. Once mature, the elms will provide abundant shade for the area.

American elm trees were one of the most popular trees in the eastern United States because of the canopied shade they provided along neighborhood streets. The trees were used widely as a shade and street tree because of its graceful, arching, vase-like growth and its tolerance to stress.
The Dutch elm disease wiped out the majority of the American elms in populated areas and still threatens the species today. The elms that will be planted on Back Campus Drive are a disease-resistant variety called the “Princeton” elm.

Dr. Robert Powell, chair and professor of the Physics Department, James Hembree, UWG’s grounds superintendent, and several fraternities and sororities will participate in the plantings.
