Mid-winter Choral ConcertFebruary 16, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their mid-winter choral concert on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. Dr. Kevin Hibbard, chair and professor of music, will direct the production. The concert will include choral music from Bach to contemporary composers from Norway, Spain, South Africa and Venezuela. The UWG Concert Choir, accompanied by part-time instructor of piano and keyboard, Jan Adams, will begin with Domine, ad adjuvandum me, by Padre Martini, a Franciscan priest who was a teacher of Mozart. Soloists for the Martini composition are Jessica Sheffield of McDonough, Lynn Weathers of Carrollton, Jeff Orme of Douglasville and Cory Speakman of Lawrenceville. Among the many additional pieces to be performed by the UWG Concert Choir are two selections in German, including Brahms’ O Schöne Nacht. The Chamber Singers will perform the enchanting piece Horizons by Peter Louis van Dijk. The piece evokes the pre-colonial San culture of South Africa, which saw its conquerors as gods. Other selections by the Chamber Singers will include a chorus from Bach’s motet Jesu, meine Freude, and contemporary Norwegian composer Knut Nysted’s powerful Be not Afraid. Both ensembles will perform pieces by well-known composer Jean Berger. The Concert Choir will close the concert with two spirituals, I Hear a Voice a-Prayin’ and Let me Fly. Admission to the performance is free. For more information contact the Department of Music at 678-839-6516. -30- |
