Day of HOPE

February 16, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s EXCEL Center will sponsor its fourth annual Day of HOPE, on Monday, Feb. 20. Day of Hope honors all students attending UWG who maintain a 3.0 GPA and their HOPE scholarships.

To recognize their achievement, the EXCEL Center will hold a half-time drawing at the men’s Braves basketball game that evening. HOPE scholars will have their names drawn for gift certificates and merchandise donated by local businesses.

Participating restaurants and businesses will also offer discounts for HOPE scholars throughout the day.

Ashley Lewis, assistant director and coordinator of mentoring and tutoring at the EXCEL Center, said it is a big achievement for students to keep their HOPE scholarship until graduation.

“Two-thirds of all HOPE scholars lose their scholarship for failing to maintain the required GPA,” said Lewis. “Day of HOPE recognizes all HOPE scholars and the hard work they put into maintaining their scholarship. The EXCEL Center recognizes the hard work of HOPE Scholars and encourages all others to pursue excellence.”

The EXCEL Center provides resources for all UWG students on campus to excel in their studies and to have a smooth transition from high school to higher education. Its services include free tutoring in all UWG core classes, academic advisement for undeclared students and certain pre-majors, academic probation counseling, mentoring programs for HOPE scholars, first year students and students in the Multicultural Achievement Program. Helping students make a university connection and successfully acclimating to college life is a top priority for UWG and the EXCEL Center.
