Wind Symphony

February 22. 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will present “Impressions” on Monday, Feb. 27, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The event is free.

The Symphonic Band will perform popular selections from the traditional band repertoire under the direction of Dr. Kevin Mobbs, instructor of music. Mobbs teaches techniques in improvisation and composition as well as orchestration and arranging in the UWG Department of Music. He will be making his conducting debut at the university with Bach’s “Arioso,” Hugh M. Stuart’s “Three Ayers from Gloucester” and Clare Grundman’s “Second American Folk Rhapsody.”

The Wind Symphony’s selections provide musical rescored arrangements of familiar tunes. Percy Grainger’s “Shepard’s Hey” and John Barnes Chance’s “Incantation and Dance” comprise the older portion of the band’s repertoire. James Curnow’s “Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew” and Ticheli’s “Blue Shades” round out the new portion of the program. Robert Jager’s “Espirit de Corps” will complete the Wind Symphony performance.

Stacy Gay, a UWG graduate assistant from Kennesaw, will make her debut on the podium with the Wind Symphony during Larry Daehn’s “As Summer was Just Beginning.” Dr. Douglas Overmier, director of bands at UWG, will also take the podium for this group performance.

In its second year, the UWG Symphonic Band is open to all UWG students who play a band instrument. The UWG Wind Symphony is comprised of the university’s top instrumentalists who are selected by audition. Although primarily composed of music majors, the Wind Symphony boasts students from a wide variety of disciplines across campus. The group has toured and performed throughout the United States.
