Dr. Cornel West to be inaugural speaker at lecture series

February 27, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - Dr. Cornel West, author and professor at Princeton University, will be the inaugural speaker at the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Distinguished Lecture series at the University of West Georgia on Thursday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the Education Center. The event is sponsored by the Center for African-American Male Research, Success and Leadership (CAMMRSL).

West is a scholar of African-American studies and philosophy of religion, an activist and a prolific author of more than 16 books that include “Race Matters” and “The Cornel West Reader.”

West accepted the invitation from Dr. Said Sewell, director of CAAMRSL and UWG professor of political science and planning. According to Sewell, West changed his travel plans for the opportunity to be the inaugural speaker for the lecture series.

“This will be one of the most profound speakers ever to come to West Georgia,” said Sewell. “To have a person of international status such as Dr. West come and speak is an honor.”

From helping to organize the Million Man March to acting in “The Matrix Reloaded” to recording a rap CD, West brings a wide range of thought and experience to his lectures.

The CAMMRLS opened at UWG in 2005 to develop and implement programs that help African- American males successfully transition to post-secondary institutions. In addition to the distinguished lecture series, CAAMRLS sponsors the W.E.B Dubois Academic Institute, Black Males With Initiative, the Bayard Rustin Community Service Program, the African American Male Learning Community and the Benjamin E. Mays Faculty/Student Luncheon.

“It is a great pleasure to have Dr. West with his credentials at Harvard and Yale to inaugurate the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series,” said Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, UWG President. “We look forward to talking with him.”

The lecture is a free event. For more information on the lecture series, call 678-839-6464.
