RSC sponsors Clothesline Project March 17, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The Responsible Sexuality Committee at the University of West Georgia will sponsor the third annual Clothesline Project on campus (between the University Community Center and the Ingram Library) on Tuesday, April 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Now an international program, the Clothesline Project started on Cape Cod, Mass., in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It offers an opportunity for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. Participants then hang the shirts on a clothesline to be viewed by others as a testimony to the problem of violence against women. On April 1, the Responsible Sexuality Committee will have shirts available for members of the University and Carrollton communities to decorate. Additionally, shirts that were decorated in previous years will be displayed on a clothesline strung between the UCC and library. According to the Clothesline Project’s web site, the Clothesline concept originated from the fact that doing laundry has been considered women’s work and, in the days of close-knit neighborhoods, women often exchanged information over backyard fences while hanging their clothes out to dry. There is no cost to decorate a shirt in support of ending violence against women and children. Everyone is welcome to this event. The Clothesline Project at UWG is also supported by Public Safety, Health Services, the UWG Sexual Assault Response Team and the Carroll Rape Crisis Center.
