Music faculty give recital

March 20, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - University of West Georgia music faculty Dr. Larry Frazier and George Mann will perform faculty recitals in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall of the Humanities Building in the last days of March.

UWG News PhotoFrazier, bass, associate professor of music and director of opera, will perform on Tuesday, March 25, at 8:15 p.m. Mann, pianist, professor of music, will perform on Friday, March 28, at 8:15 p.m.

Frazier will offer the public a solo vocal recital accompanied on piano by Dr. Daniel Bakos, professor of music and director of jazz studies. The program will begin with an aria by Handel followed by two other arias from oratorios, the first a classical setting by Haydn, and the second from the Stabat Mater from Rossini.

Florid vocal display and sacred themes will then yield to harmonic and lyric subtlety and the poetic viewpoint of Brahms’ Four Serious Songs and a French set with works by Stravinsky, Duparc and Milhaud. The recital will conclude with four spirituals which are especially effective arranged for the bass voice, including Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen and Deep River.

Frazier, known to Carroll County audiences as the director of the UWG Opera Workshop, recently produced Mozart’s popular Marriage of Figaro in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

UWG News PhotoMann will perform a program which includes works by Bach, Haydn, MacDowell and Liszt.

He has performed widely as a solo recitalist, accompanist and chamber music participant. In 1997 he was commissioned by Intersound Recording to make a set of four compact discs of well-known piano pieces. He is also one of the pianists listed in The Piano in Concert, a comprehensive work including pianists and their concert programs from the time of Liszt to the late 20th century.

A recipient of the Master Teacher Certificate from the Music Teachers National Association, Mann has trained many students who received recognition in various piano competitions. He has presented numerous piano workshops and master classes and is frequently asked to judge various competitions throughout the South.

Both recitals are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Music Department at 770-836-6516.
