UWG hosts Russian librarians March 19, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The Ingram Library at the University of West Georgia recently hosted 10 librarians from the Republic of Georgia. The librarians represented both large University libraries and smaller public libraries.
The group chose to stay in Carrollton for several reasons: the GCIV had worked with Carroll County before; they liked the Georgia/Georgia connection; the interpreter of the group lived in Carrollton; and the group had requested to visit various types of libraries, which they were able to do from Carrollton. Mark McManus, librarian associate professor and associate director of University libraries, and Shirley Lankford, librarian associate professor and head of Instructional Services, coordinated their day-long visit of the campus library. The group visited and spoke with library staff in the Annie Belle Special Collections Room, the Thomas B. Murphy Holocaust Teacher Training and Resource Center, various library departments and work areas including reference, government documents, circulation, interlibrary loans, cataloging and acquisition. They were also given a demonstration on the numerous electronic databases available to UWG students, faculty, and staff. At the end of the visit, Irakli Garibashvili, president of the Georgian Library Association, presented the Ingram Library with a poster and two programs, in their native language, from the Republic of Georgia Library Association. The librarians also visited the technical library of West Central Tech, the public library of Neva Lomason, the Atlanta Journal Constitution library, the library at Emory University, and SOLINET (Southeastern Library Network) offices in Atlanta. They also attended the Library Legislative Day at the Capital. For more information about this visit, contact Lankford at 770-838-3154.
