Pair receives Scandinavian Festival scholarship March 31, 2003 CARROLLTON, GA - The scholarship committee of the Scandinavian Festival Inc. has awarded scholarships to two students from the University of West Georgia. The recipients are Anna Jaskiewicz, a graduate student in music from Finland, and Hjordis Lara Hreinsdottir, an undergraduate student majoring in communications from Iceland.
Jaskiewics and Hreinsdottir received the Jeffrey Linden Memorial Scholarship created in honor of the son of Barbro Linden who died on his way to the Scandinavian Festival. “This scholarship was originally for one person, but the scholarship committee told us that they couldn’t decide who to give it to, so they split it between us,” said Hreinsdottir. In order to be considered for the scholarships, the applicants had to be from one of the five Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden); be a full time student, preferably a graduate student at a University in Georgia; maintain a minimum of a B minus overall grade point average; and be active in student activities and community affairs. John Woodyard, chairman of the scholarship committee, said, “We were highly impressed with both ladies. I might add that they spoke with high praise for the University of West Georgia.” For more information about the Scandinavian Festival Inc., visit their web page at www.scandga.org/festival. -30- |
