Williams loves the challenge of numbers

March 19, 2003

CARROLLTON, GA - He knows he wants to do something with numbers—maybe he will be an accountant or a mathematician after college. Fort Valley’s Alan Williams, a 17-year-old senior at Peach County High School, is beginning his freshman year of college as a student in the Advanced Academy of Georgia.

UWG News PhotoWilliams is one of 59 students enrolled in the Advanced Academy of Georgia located at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, a residential, early-entrance-to-college program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors who wish to accelerate their academic careers.

He maintains a full academic course load and is taking classes offered through West Georgia’s Honors College. When he graduates from high school in the spring of 2003, he will have earned enough credits to be classified as a college sophomore.

Advanced Academy students live together in a residence hall designated specifically for this program, young men in one wing and young women in another. The residential program includes structure, consistent with the needs of younger students, and provides community service, recreational, and leadership activities for balanced academic and personal growth.

Williams earned admission into the Academy due to his excellent high school academic record and SAT scores. He has always been a motivated student, earning primarily A’s in high school. History has repeated itself in this regard as he has approached his University studies with the same dedication.

So what is it about math that Williams likes? He loves the challenge of the Pythagorean theorem, advanced trigonometry and calculus. Numbers, theories, and problem solving come naturally to him.

As a Peach County High School Trojan, Williams was an active student. In addition to being captain of the math team, he was in a number of school organizations including the Latin Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the Concert Band. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. At West Georgia Williams has been elected to a floor representative position in the Residence Hall Council, joined the Quiz Bowl and intramural teams, and is tutoring a student in the local middle school.

Williams is the son of Nazerlene Williams of Fort Valley.
