Big Night!

March 10, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - The Big Night! An Evening of Student Scholarship, which is sponsored annually at the University of West Georgia by the student Association for Research and Creative Humanities, is approaching once again.

Big Night is an opportunity for students to showcase their research in the form of a 10-minute research presentation or performance. Students compete within six academic areas, and only one project or paper is selected from each area to be presented at Big Night. All other submissions are accepted for display as exhibits after the presentations.

This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, April 8. It will begin at 7 p.m. with research presentations in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts and then move to the Technology-enhanced Learning Center atrium for an hors d’oeuvre reception and viewing of research exhibitions.

Competitions for the honor of presenting research are being conducted in the weeks before Big Night. The competitions in the arts, education and humanities have been completed. Competitions in business, the sciences and the social sciences will be held in the second and third weeks of March.

Jamie Howell of Carroll County won the arts competition in February. Howell, an art education major, will present an original piece of artwork at Big Night. She is sponsored by Shelly Elman, assistant professor and director of theatre, and Eilis Crean, assistant professor of art. Winners in the education competition in early March were Brett Folske and Kerri Eagan, both sport management majors. Folske and Eagan are sponsored by Dr. Richard Southall, assistant professor of physical education and recreation.
