Honor's Day Recital

March 29, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Exceptional students in the University of West Georgia Department of Music will perform during the annual Honors Day Recital on Wednesday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall of the Humanities Building. The event is part of the University-wide Honors Day festivities and features undergraduate student performers and academic award winners in the Department of Music.

Performers in the Honors Recital are recommended by instructors in their major and approved by the music faculty after audition. In addition to the performances, academic awards will be presented to several students before the recital by Dr. Kevin Hibbard, chair of the Department of Music and director of University choirs, and Dr. Carol Gingerich, professor of piano.

Performers will be Philip Jones of Union City, baritone, who will sing “Der Tod, das ist die kuehle Nacht” by Brahms; Allison DeLoach of Douglasville, flute, “Summer Music” by Bennett; Elizabeth Mote of Villa Rica, soprano, “When I Am Laid in Earth” from Dido and Aeneas by Purcell; Brandon Johnson of Douglasville, guitar, “Prelude No. 2” by Villa-Lobos; Tracey Gentry of Zebulon, mezzo-soprano, “Suesser Freund” by Schumann; Jameson Linville of Newnan, baritone, “Childhood among the Ferns” by Finzi; William Camp of Rockmart, saxophone, “Braziliera” from Scaramouche by Milhaud; Darshena Wood of Palmetto, soprano, “Heidenroeslein” by Schubert; and Thomas Carrington Vaden of Lilburn, piano, “Malagueña” by Lecuonoa.

Accompanists for the soloists will include Jan Adams, staff accompanist; Dr. Cheryl Morris, assistant professor of music; Dr. Dan Bakos, professor and director of jazz studies; and student Wayne Gilreath of Bremen.

Students who will receive academic awards are Camp, Larry Teal Saxophone Award; Christopher Carr of Riverdale, Mary Lou Munn Award; DeLoach, Gordon Watson Award; Gentry, MTNA Star Award; Kelly Harris of Woodland, Ala., Music Faculty Award; Mote, Carrollton Lit Mu Club Award; and Charlene Wiggins of Carrollton, Genevieve Reynolds Award for Piano Pedagogy.

DeLoach will receive her award with the other Gordon Watson winners at the Honors Day convocation in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts at 1:30 p.m.
