Music Recitals

March 29, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Several University of West Georgia music students will perform recitals this spring in such areas as voice, guitar and piano to fulfill their degree requirements. The performances will take place in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall in the Humanities Building.

The first performance will be on Wednesday, March 31, at 8:15 p.m. by senior guitarist Eric Fudurich, a student of Dr. Thomas Garcia, assistant professor of music. Fudurich, a performance major from Roswell, will play works by John Dowland, Luis Navaez, Bach, Fernando Sor, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Leo Brower.

On Thursday, April 1, at 8:15 p.m., soprano Elizabeth Mote will perform her senior recital, accompanied by Jan Adams, staff accompanist, on the piano. Mote will sing works in Italian by Pergolesi, Gluck, Legrenzi and Puccini; several German Lieder (songs) by Brahms; several French melodies by Fauré and Berlioz; and an English song cycle by Benjamin Lees.

Mote is a vocal performance major who studies with Dr. Larry Frazier, associate professor of music and opera director, and recently sang the role of Nedda in the Opera Workshop production of “Pagliacci” by Leoncavallo. She is a native of Villa Rica and is the daughter of Jamie Mote. Mote has been selected to perform at Honors Day and Wright Scholars recitals for the last three years and has also appeared in the Opera Workshop productions of “Die Fledermaus” and “Le Nozze di Figaro.”

On Friday, April 2, at 8:15 p.m., pianist Thomas Carrington Vaden will perform his junior recital. He will perform works by Bach, Beethoven and Ernesto Lecuona on piano and harpsichord. The son of Carr and Mary Ellen Vaden of Lilburn, Vaden is a piano performance major studying piano and piano pedagogy with Dr. Carol Gingerich, assistant professor of music.

Composer and pianist Michael Gilreath will be joined by other student musicians to present a senior composition recital of his works for piano, saxophone and percussion on Monday, April 5, at 8:15 p.m. Gilreath’s pieces include a two-movement piano sonata, works for saxophone ensemble and jazz combo, and a work in several parts for percussion ensemble titled “Scenes from North Carolina Lights: the Outer Banks.” The sections of this piece are named after various lighthouses, which will be shown in a slide show during the performance.

Gilreath, the son of Fred and Sherry Gilreath of LaFayette, studies composition with Dr. Daniel Bakos, professor of music and director of jazz studies, and piano with George Mann, retired professor of music. He has performed in Wright Scholar concerts, been a presenter at UWG’s Big Night, and placed in the Georgia Music Teachers Association annual competition. He also teaches private piano lessons.
