Voter registration drive

March 10, 2004

CARROLLTON, GA - Voting is a powerful way for young adults to make a difference in their government and the University of West Georgia is playing a role in encouraging young people to do just that.

According to Dr. Tim Hynes, vice president for academic affairs, no activity is more powerfully associated with democratic participation than voting and voter registration.

UWG is a participant of the American Democracy Project, and along with various other projects, has focused its efforts on significantly increasing student voter registration.

Meredith Wingate Branch, voter education coordinator for Region One, conducted a registration drive at UWG in the Fall of 2003 and Winter 2004. Branch registered 297 student voters in both drives combined.

Charles Beard, director of University libraries, Linda Picklesimer, director of student activities, and Dr. Said Sewell, assistant professor of political science, have taken leadership roles in efforts to increase the number of deputy registrars.

According to Picklesimer, multiple voter registration drives will be held on campus again this fall to track the number of UWG students registering to vote. She noted that an increase in the opportunities for students to register will hopefully encourage them to become more involved in the electoral processes.
