Political Lecture at Berry College March 3, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - “Should America Have a Democratic or Republican Future?” – a March 31 debate between nationally renowned political strategists William Galston and Harvey Mansfield – highlights the Eighth Annual Conference on Politics, Religion, Culture and Community at Berry College in Rome. Conference sponsors include Berry College, Oglethorpe University, the University of West Georgia, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation. Galston was deputy assistant for domestic policy during Bill Clinton’s first term as president and also served as senior advisor to Al Gore during his 1991-92 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Mansfield teaches political philosophy at Harvard University and was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush. The 7:30 p.m. debate caps a full day beginning with an 11 a.m. luncheon featuring Jocelyn Jones Evans, author of Women, Partisanship, and the Congress. Afternoon headliners include John Seery, author of America Goes to College, and Naomi Schaefer Riley, whose book God in the Quad examines the growing influence of religious colleges on higher education. All sessions will be held in Berry’s science auditorium. Dr. Peter Lawler, Dana professor and department chair for government and international studies at Berry, is the coordinator for the debate. Lawler also serves as a member of President Bush’s Council on Bioethics.
