Math Conference March 31 , 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Department of Mathematics will host a Workshop on Sampling, Spectral Theory and Their Applications on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, in the Boyd Building, Room 301. The two-day workshop will consist of three mini series of lectures on the latest trends, updates and methods by experts in the area of differential equations. The event is intended for researchers and graduate students working in the field. Professors Lance Littlejohn from Utah State University, Hans Volkmer from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Ahmed Zayed from DePaul University will each deliver three one-hour lectures. “The original idea of these workshops came from Professor Tuan Vu, the newly appointed Crider Professor of Mathematics, who wanted to start a tradition of workshops in applied mathematics which would stimulate research in the rapidly growing areas of applied mathematics,” said Dr. Amin Boumenir, assistant professor of mathematics, who is organizing the event with Vu. The first applied mathematics workshop was hosted on inverse problems in February 2004. “Through these workshops, students and faculty at UWG are exposed to the latest developments in these areas,” he explained. “Students also obtain an overview of various interesting topics in applied mathematics. Senior students have an opportunity to discuss their interests with experts, which might positively influence their choice for postgraduate studies.” Session 1 will be held on Friday, April 8, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sessions 2 and 3 will be on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m., respectively. Registration is free, but reservations should be made by e-mailing Boumenir at boumenir@westga.edu or Dr. Tuan Vu, Marion Crider Professor of Mathematics, at vu@westga.edu.
