Nursing Program now at Newnan March 18, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The Coweta County Board of Commissioners has voted to support the University of West Georgia’s creation of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree program at its Newnan Center in Newnan, Ga. The degree leads to initial licensure as a registered nurse. The new program will offer local students who have completed their required core curriculum courses the opportunity to complete the professional sequence of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree on the Newnan campus. Classes of approximately 30 nursing students will begin study in June of each year, with projected completion in two and a half years. The first course of study will begin in June 2005. “We are delighted to be able to offer professional nursing education at the Newnan Center,” said Dr. Kathryn Grams, chair of the UWG Department of Nursing. “We expect that our graduates will contribute to healthcare services in Coweta County.” Rob Tornow, coordinator of the Newnan Center, said, “Obviously, we are very pleased with the vote by the County Commissioners. They have taken a major step to provide backing for nursing in west Georgia. We intend to give the students and Coweta County a program that meets their expectations.” The University of West Georgia has provided high-quality nursing education in Georgia for 30 years and is internationally recognized for creating a supportive and personal learning environment that reflects caring as the essence of nursing and nursing education. The nursing program is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing, and its undergraduate and graduate programs are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The upper-division professional sequence of the B.S.N. program offers 60 hours of nursing major courses in the art and science of nursing. The curriculum includes traditional classroom and online learning as well as clinical nursing experiences in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, home health, public health, schools and industry.
