Low Income Taxpayer Clinic open March 18, 2005 CARROLLTON, GA - The West Georgia Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), operated by the Department of Accounting and Finance in the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia, represents low-income taxpayers in controversies involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The clinic’s primary focus involves audit, appeals and collection issues. The clinic is open Monday - Friday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. (by appointment only) and is located in Room 9 of the Richards College of Business. According to Dr. Bruce Bird, professor of business administration and director of the clinic, certain income guidelines and other criteria must be satisfied before the West Georgia LITC will agree to represent a given taxpayer. The West Georgia LITC receives matching grant funds from the federal government. However, the clinic, employees and volunteers are completely independent of and are not associated with the federal government. The clinic has been open since late September of 2004 and recently received a second grant from the federal government to operate the clinic during the 2005 calendar year. Bird
sees the clinic both as a way to help taxpayers in the West Georgia region
and to assist undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in
pursuing careers in taxation. -30- |
