Automated External Defibrillators placed on campus

March 27, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The Department of Health Services at the University of West Georgia has placed automated external defibrillators (AED) throughout the university campus.

An AED is a portable device designed to generate an electric shock to a person whose heart has stopped or to a person with an irregular heartbeat who needs to have their heart’s natural rhythm restored.

The 11 AED units currently on campus are located in the Department of Health Services, the Department of Public Safety, the Intramurals and Recreational Services Office in the Old Auditorium, the Alumni House and the HPE Building. Three Public Safety patrol cars and three UWG shuttle buses also carry the AED units.

Director of Nursing at the Department of Health Services, Tura Anthony, RN, said the most important detail to remember is who to call first in an emergency.

“Call Public Safety, first, and then call 911,” said Anthony. “Public Safety personnel will get there faster. They know where everything is on campus and have access through all the gates.” The emergency number to the Department of Public Safety is 678-839-6000 or 96000.
