Blue Mountain Brass to perform at UWG

March 16, 2006

CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia’s Department of Music will host a performance by Blue Mountain Brass on Monday, March 27, at 8:15 p.m. in Kathy Cashen Recital Hall.

The members of Blue Mountain Brass and Carlisle all play in regional orchestras or ensembles and created a foursome to highlight chamber music for brass. Pianist Dr. Kris Carlisle, assistant professor of piano at Berry College, will accompany the group.

Blue Mountain Brass will perform Francis Poulenc’s “Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone,” Knudage Riisager’s “Concertino,” Trygve Madsen’s “Sonata for Horn and Piano,” and Arthur Frackenpohl’s “Brass Trio.”

Carlisle has performed worldwide both as soloist and collaborator and has recently released his CD, “The American Evolution: Piano Variations,” which documents changes in musical style in the contemporary era. He has held residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and with the Rome Festival Orchestra in Italy.

Dr. Ellie Jenkins, instructor of horn and horn ensemble at UWG, will be playing the French horn. Jenkins performs regularly with numerous organizations including the Rome and Carroll Symphony Orchestras, the Roman Festival Brass and the Chamber Players of the South. She has appeared with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and toured Taiwan with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in 2004.

Dr. Tom Smith, assistant professor of music at Berry College, will play the trumpet. Smith teaches trumpet and horn and has performed professionally since the age of 14. He has shared the stage with many prominent artists and groups in both classical and jazz music.

Dr. Sam Baltzer, professor of music at Shorter College in Rome, will be playing the trombone. Baltzer has been an active member of the musical community in Rome since 1987 and is the founder and conductor of the Northwest Georgia Winds, the Chamber Players of the South and is artistic director of Rome’s Own Musical Ensembles (ROME). Balzer is also an active composer, arranger and performing musician.
