Jazz Ensemble PerformanceMarch 10, 2006 CARROLLTON, GA - The University of West Georgia Jazz Ensemble will perform its spring concert on Thursday, March 16, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will be directed by Dr. Daniel Bakos, professor of music, and is a free event. The UWG Jazz Ensemble is the university’s own big band and is modeled after the legendary large jazz ensembles of the mid-20th century. The ensemble’s musical style, instrumentation and much of its repertoire bring the music of the swing era to the stage. Some of the jazz charts to be performed include Benny Carter’s “Vine Street Rumble” and “The Legend,” which was recorded by the world-famous Count Basie Orchestra; “It Ain’t Necessarily So” by George Gershwin and Bill Potts; “Bernie’s Tune” by Bernie Miller and Gene Roland and recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra; “Spanish Steps” by Steve Spiegl; “Irrelevant, Incompetent and Immaterial” by Chris Brayman and “Quintessence” by Hank Levy. Two music majors who are studying performance with a jazz emphasis will be featured. Bryan Hall of Douglasville will play string bass in “Bernie’s Tune” and Kevin Wright of Sharpsburg will play trumpet in “Spanish Steps.” The March concert is the first of several jazz events offered by the UWG Department of Music this semester. Bakos, a pianist and professor of music theory, jazz studies and composition at UWG, will bring his own jazz combo, RazzaMaJazz, to campus on April 7. The UWG Jazz Ensemble will host the Sunbelt Jazz Festival on April 28 with award-winning jazz vocalist and songwriter Kathy Kosins. The final jazz event is the UWG Jazz Combo recital on May 1, which features the students of UWG instructor and saxophonist Mariano Pacetti. For more information, call 678-839-6262. -30- |
